The Urgency Of a Union Of Europe With America
Press conference co-sponsored by the Streit Council and the National Press Club - September 9, 2008
Summary
Edouard Balladur, Prime Minister of France from 1993 to 1995, argued that uniting Europe organically with America is essential for the survival of Western values given the rise of China, the return of Russia, and global terrorism. He presented his new book, For a Union of the West, which represents, in the words of the New York Times, "the underlying premise" of France's new pro-U.S. policies under Sarkozy. Current French President Nicolas Sarkozy had been PM Balladur's budget minister and spokesman, and they are still close.

The press conference was well attended, filling a double room in the press club. Mr. Balladur's opening statement was followed by a series of questions from the press.
