Transatlantic Marketplace Must Deliver Results

Chancellor Angela Merkel demonstrated political courage and economic vision in announcing that Germany would place the transatlantic trade and investment relationship at the heart of Germany's European Union and Group of Eight presidencies this year (reports, January 3). Her declaration deserves the unequivocal support of other EU leaders, and the US administration. Together the EU and US represent 40 per cent of the world's gross domestic product in terms of purchasing power parity. By removing the thousands of inhibitors to investment - differing financial accounting systems, divergent technical standards across all sectors, uneven protection for intellectual property, competition policy hurdles - the economic benefits could be huge.
