“Global Threats, Atlantic Structures”
Conference Washington DC
Dr. Stella of the Streit Council introduces The Streit Council together with Radio Free Europe and the Hudson Institute, held a major two-day conference on deepening the unity of the Atlantic democracies in face of new global dangers. Bringing together a number of foreign policy experts and officials from both sides of the Atlantic, it discussed how transatlantic structures should be adapted and upgraded to meet the imperatives of the 21st-century.
It addressed the question of how can Europe and America improve cooperation to meet the disparate threats of the new era, particularly terrorism. It also asked, conversely, how to use current challenges to achieve greater Atlantic integration and consolidate it for the long run. Among those addressing these questions were Jose-Maria Aznar, Prime Minister of Spain 1996 to 2004; Peter Rodman, Assistant Secretary of Defense; General William Odom, former Director of the National Security Agency; Prof. Niall Ferguson, Harvard University; Prof. Charles Kupchan, Council on Foreign Relations, Daniel Hamilton, Director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University; and Antonio Martino, Italian Defense Minister 2001 to 2006.
