DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT of PAPERS: January 10, 2006 Eligibility: MA and PhD students in history, political science and international relations The Streit Council for a Union of Democracies works toward closer integration of democracies internationally, motivated by the growth of interdependence and the necessity of democracy for depth and sustainability of integration. In this light, the Streit Council is promoting scholarly studies on democracy, federalism, Atlanticism, the organization of inter-democracy relations, and the impact of inter-democracy arrangements on the global system. We are inviting submission of proposals from MA and Ph.D. candidates on topics within the theme of the institutional prerequisites for furthering the integration of democracies internationally. We have a particular interest in papers that take a risk and put forward new approaches to foster closer cooperation among democracies, at the same time providing practical and theoretical grounding for their proposals. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
These suggestions are not exhaustive but indicative. Any topic may be accepted if pertinent to institutional means of enhancing cooperation among democracies, and effective multilateralism. Procedures. Four winning papers will receive awards provided through the Frank Educational Fund and their authors will take part in an international conference/seminar in Washington, D.C. in 2006 to explore these and similar issues. The best paper will be awarded $2,000; Second, Third and Fourth $1,000. Papers will be judged by a process of blind review. Papers should be submitted by January 10, 2006 Winners will be announced on January 30, 2006, at which time they will receive half of their award and will be invited to join a round table session in Washington, D.C. (compensation will be offered to meet basic travel and accommodations costs) in order to present and discuss their work together with other graduate students, academics and practitioners. This will be part of an international conference/seminar. Afterwards, with the benefit of discussion at the conference, the winners will finalize their work, send it to the Streit Council, and to receive the second half of the award. Papers should be 5,000 to 9,000 words in length, in English and submitted in electronic format. Submissions should not have been previously published or submitted for publication.
